Conclusion

Just because a reel is heavy doesn't mean it is bad. For example, if you are going Marlin fishing or tuna fishing then you will want an extremely heavy duty reel that can handle a massive animal - and that will come at the cost of a heavy reel. But it is going to be on a boat, you will never cast it or carry it very far - so the heavy weight doesn't matter.

If you are going to be doing a lot of casting, such as bass fishing or trout fishing, then you will want to pick an extremely lightweight reel. You may be carrying your tackle long distances and making hundreds of casts a day. The drop in weight of even a few ounces can be the difference between a sore arm and an enjoyable fishing adventure.

Fishing reel weight is not the primary specification that you should be picking a reel on - things just as max drag, fishing line capacity, price, and durability will take precedence - but it should certainly be a consideration.

If you are looking for more specifications, they are all available on the manufacturers websites, such as Shimano, Abu Garcia, Daiwa, or Penn.

We are constantly updating these lists as different reels become popular and new models are released. If you notice a particular reel is missing or the weights have changed, then please leave a comment below so we can keep this table up to date.

Happy fishing.
