Moonshine Rod Company Drifter Fly Rod Review

By

Moonshine Rod Company has carved a path towards the top of the fly fishing industry in the few short years since it was established in 2016. The brand is responsible for making some of the best value fly rods in the industry and their Drifter Series has garnered high amounts of praise from anglers all over the world.

The Drifter is available in a wide variety of different models to allow users to get the ideal size and style that’s right for their own needs. This particular rod series is widely considered to be one of the best values in the entire industry as it is significantly more affordable than other premium fly fishing rods that are currently available.

Taking a closer look at the Moonshine Rod Company’s Drifter Rod Series reveals just why so many fly fishing enthusiasts are highly impressed with this particular model. This review is based on my own experiences and judgements as an angler.

Drifter Rod Series Overview

The Drifter rod series is crafted from high-quality graphite material that’s ideal for fly fishing rods. This graphite is designed so that the Drifter rods are highly nimble and able to allow anglers to easily cast their fly line out to a considerable distance compared to other rods that are available for relatively the same price.

The rod is made with medium action, which is another factor in why so many anglers find it very easy to cast and handle a variety of different flies. Users can opt for any one of 11 different Drifter rod models that range in size, as well as weights. The 4-section rods are made with high-grade AAA cork handles that are very comfortable and easy to grip for all-day casting and fishing.

Each one of the Drifter rod series’ components are made to the same high level specifications that Moonshine Rod Company has become known for in recent years. The ceramic guides are made to easily accommodate line in a way that keeps it from getting tangled. Many users report that the Drifter series is among the top models currently available and that it is comparable to some of the high-end, premium fly fishing rods that range in price from a few hundred dollars to more than a thousand.

Drifter Rod Series Models

The Drifter rod series is extremely popular for a number of reasons, but one of the main ones is that users can select the rod that’s the ideal length and weight for their own preference. Drifter rods range in lengths from 7’6” to 11’ long while the weights of each rod might vary from 3wt to 8wt. For experienced fly fishing enthusiasts, it can often be tough to find a good fishing rod that’s just the right size, but Moonshine Rod Company has worked to accommodate just about any type of rod size and weight with the Drifter series.

Rod Blank Material

Moonshine Rod Company crafted each of its Drifter series rods out of a high-grade graphite material that’s considered to be ideal for fly rods. The graphite is strong enough to allow for catching and reeling in large-sized trout, but still nimble enough to give angles plenty of casting power. The rods also offer a high amount of sensitivity for anglers who might want to use a variety of different techniques like nymphing or other methods.

Rod Action

Many of the most skilled fly anglers consider a medium action rod to be ideal for an all-purpose fly fishing rod as it allows for an optimal level of stiffness in both casting and reeling in your catch. Each Drifter series rod is made to offer medium power so that anglers will have no problem casting their line out to long distances when needed.

Many fly fishing rods are often too nimble for catching bigger trout and other species, but users have reported that the Drifter series rods are quite durable, even when reeling in heavier fish that might put a strain on most fly rods.

Guides

When Moonshine Rod Company started out, the brand’s engineers wanted to design a rod that was of a high-quality material throughout its entirety. The Drifter series is made to the same high standards that other Moonshine Rod Company products have been crafted according to. This rod is made with ceramic guides that keep the fishing line from moving around too much, which can sometimes cause erratic casts.

Rod Handle

The Drifter series rod consists of a number of high-quality components from the rod tip to the butt. The handle is crafted from a premium-quality cork material that’s considered AAA-rated cork. Many users report that the handle is very comfortable and also offers a non-slip quality that allows users to maintain a steady grip on the Drifter rod in both casting and reeling.

The rod’s overall design is made so that users can comfortably whip the line back and forth in the proper fly fishing motion for many hours without feeling overly fatigued by the weight of the rod or handle. The reel seat is also crafted with anodized copper to provide ample strength that’s designed to last.

Moonshine Drifter vs Moonshine Epiphany

I always prefer to look at a new product in comparison to its alternatives, and in this case I have selected another Moonshine fly rod in the Epiphany series.

If you thought the drifter was a premium fly rod, then the Epiphany is the next level. It is an upgrade from Moonshine’s original Epiphany released in 2017 where they have reduced the overall weight by 1 oz – although this still makes it heavier than the drifter option.

Conclusion

There’s no denying that the Drifter rods are all made to a very high standard and many users agree that these rods are quite possibly the best value when considering that they’re all available for a reasonable price. The rod is considered to be ideal for beginner fly fishing enthusiasts since it’s relatively affordable, and is also a solid choice for intermediate level anglers who are looking to step up their game with a quality fly rod.

The Drifter rods all come with Moonshine Rod Company’s no-fault lifetime warranty, which covers any damages that might occur that would require repairs or even full replacement. This rod is lightweight and truly an ideal choice for fly fishing enthusiasts of any skill level as it offers the right combination of great quality and high performance.
