Piscifun Torrent Baitcasting Reel Review

By

It’s hard to find a good quality baitcasting reel if you’re trying to stay within a tight budget. There are plenty of mid-level baitcasting models available for anglers who are willing to spend $50 to $100, but the choices are limited when it comes to finding one below the $100 mark that still delivers in terms of quality, performance and reliability.

The Piscifun Torrent Baitcasting Reel is one of the few baitcasting models you’ll find that’s under the $50 mark and still comparable to some of the more sought-after reels in the mid-level range. It’s an absolute workhorse of a reel that’s a lot of fun to fish with, especially if you like to throw topwater lures like frogs, poppers, and others to catch lunker bass.

In this article, I’ll take a closer look at the Piscifun Torrent Baitcasting Reel and explain why it’s one of the better-quality baitcasting reels I have tested this season.

Piscifun Torrent Baitcasting Reel Overview

Piscifun is one of the newer brands in the fishing industry that’s making quite a splash with bass fishing anglers and others all across the world. The company prides itself on making great quality products that are still affordable for the average angler. The name Piscifun comes from the combination of the Latin word ‘pisci,’ and ‘fun.’

The Piscifun Torrent Baitcasting Reel is the perfect representation of what the brand stands for. It’s a well-made reel that offers a high-quality performance without the hefty price tag that you normally find on some of the best baitcasting models on the market today. This reel is one of the more versatile ones you’ll find in the fishing industry today that can be used with a wide range of different rigs and lure presentations.

The Torrent comes in two different speeds that include a 7.1:1 and a 5.3:1 gear ratio that lets you choose between one that offers blazing-fast speeds and the other that’s better-suited for cranking and bringing in monster bass on steady-running lures. It’s made with a magnetic braking system that’s really easy to use and makes the Piscifun Torrent Baitcasting Reel incredibly accurate when it comes to making short and long casts with a variety of different-sized lures.

This reel is packed with a range of great quality features and parts that make it feel very much like a premium-quality reel in your hands. Let’s take a closer look at some of the Piscifun Torrent Baitcasting Reel’s most notable features and how they make this reel stand out from the competition in terms of affordable baitcasting models.

Construction

The Piscifun Torrent Baitcasting Reel is made out of corrosion-resistant material that allows you to fish in freshwater and saltwater environments. The reel’s construction leaves a bit to be desired and it’s probably one of the few downsides that we can actually point out where it falls short of other mid-level baitcasting reels. It might not be as rigid as some anglers require, but that’s typically not something that most anglers are overly concerned with unless they’re planning to catch giant-sized fish that will put a significant strain on the reel’s structural design.

The reel is built with a very unique and convenient oil port on the side plate that allows you to easily apply oil to the reel’s interior when necessary. The side plate can also be quickly and easily removed to gain access to the CNC machined aluminum spool for any cleaning or to resolve any tangles that might occur with the line.

Overall, the Piscifun Torrent Baitcasting Reel is a very lightweight model that tips the scales at only 8 ounces for both models. It’s durable enough to get the job done in just about any fishing scenario and is perfect for bass fishing or going after other freshwater species.

Adjustable Magnetic Braking System

The Adjustable Magnetic Braking system is likely the most talked-about feature of the Piscifun Torrent Baitcasting Reel. This braking system goes a long way in helping to virtually eliminate backlashing the reel when casting. The braking system is made up of 5 well-placed magnets that help control the rotation of the ported aluminum spool.

The magnetic braking system can be easily adjusted using your thumb while holding your rod and reel, which allows you to make crucial changes to the drag system while you’re on the water. This means you can dial up the perfect setting for a spinnerbait after having thrown a lighter lure that might have called for a lower setting on the braking system.

The brake system’s adjustments range from 0-10, with 10 being the greatest application of the braking power of the Piscifun Torrent Baitcasting Reel.

Drag System

The Piscifun Torrent Baitcasting Reel boasts an impressive drag system that’s both powerful and smooth. This reel’s drag system is built with a high-strength brass drive-gear, as well as 3-layer high-grade carbon fiber drag washers. Thanks to a CNC machined brass gear and the other parts mentioned, the Piscifun Torrent Baitcasting Reel offers a max drag weight of 18 pounds, which is more than enough to handle most freshwater fish species.

Anglers who have used the Piscifun Torrent Baitcasting Reel typically note that the drag feels very smooth compared to virtually any other baitcasting reel that’s sold in a similar price range. The Torrent is well-suited for handling monster fish that usually require in-game adjustments to the drag in order to maintain control over your catch.

The drag is controlled by a simple switch that’s located on the side of the reel. This switch can be flipped to engage the star drag, which allows you to dial up precise drag adjustments as needed while you’re fighting and reeling in your fish.

Ball Bearing System

Compared to most lower or mid-level baitcasting reels, the Piscifun Torrent feels exceptionally smooth when casting and during your retrieve. It doesn’t offer the same level of smoothness that you might find in a higher level Shimano, Daiwa or other more expensive brand, but it does manage to impress seasoned anglers who know what to look for in a baitcasting reel in terms of performance and value.

The Torrent is made with a 5+1 bearing system that’s likely smoother than any other baitcasting reel you’ll find for less than $50. Piscifun went to great lengths to ensure that the reel would be capable of withstanding the usual saltwater corrosion that so often renders other, poorly-equipped reels useless. The engineers and design experts for Piscifun crafted this reel with shielded ball bearings so that it would be capable of standing up to any damage that might occur from saltwater or chemical components.

Line Capacity

The Piscifun Torrent Baitcasting Reel’s spool is made to offer decent capacity when using both braided line and mono or fluoro. The line capacity differs depending on whether you purchase the faster 7.1:1 gear ratio Torrent, or the slower 5.3:1 ratio version of the reel.

With the faster model, you’ll be able to collect as much as 120 yards of 10 pound test monofilament line, as well as the same amount (120 yards) when spooling the reel with 30 pound test braided line.

The 5.3:1 gear ratio model of the Piscifun Torrent Baitcasting Reel offers a greater line capacity on its spool. This reel allows anglers to have as much as 195 yards of 10-pound monofilament fishing line on, as well as 145 yards of 30-pound braided line.

Other Notable Features

There are a few other features that the Piscifun Torrent Baitcasting Reel offers that are worth mentioning. The reel comes with a small spool tension knob that allows you to adjust the spool before making your cast in order to get it just right for the type of lure you’re using. This spool tension knob makes a subtle clicking sound for each individual adjustment level, which is very helpful and allows anglers to keep track of just how many ‘clicks’ they should adjust depending on the specific lure they’re using.

It’s also important to point out that the Piscifun Torrent Baitcasting Reel is very easy to clean and allows you to lubricate it’s inner workings without having to take the reel apart. This is a major point of frustration for most anglers who either don’t have the time to disassemble, clean and lubricate their reel, or they simply don’t want to go through the trouble to do it. The Torrent is made with a small, removable screw that allows for the bearings to be lubricated from the outside with the lubricant of your choice.
