Team Lew’s HyperMag Reel Review

Lew’s is one of the more well-known brands in the fishing industry that specializes in producing outstanding quality spinning and baitcasting reels. Most of their products are offered at a price point that the average angler can afford, but the company does put out a few higher-quality models each year to serve competitive anglers who demand that their equipment meet certain expectations.

The Team Lew’s HyperMag reel is the smallest and lightest model that the company makes. It is built on the company’s exclusive Super Low Profile (SLP) platform and offers some very high quality features that serious anglers should take into consideration if they’re in the market for a smaller, lighter reel.

In this article, I will take a closer look at the Team Lew’s HyperMag reel and explain how it’s design and features will help meet the needs of experienced anglers who want to have a great quality reel that won’t be overly bulky and heavy to actually use.

Team Lew’s HyperMag Reel Overview

The reel itself is made to be the brand’s answer to anglers who want to have a small, lightweight reel that they can use for lighter lures that won’t cause them to have fatigue after several hours on the water. The reel is made with a one-piece magnesium frame that helps to accomplish their lightweight build while still offering a decent amount of durability at the same time.

The reel weighs just 5.4 ounces, which I consider to be much lighter than most other reels that are currently on the market and that offer similar features and capabilities. It features an ultra-smooth 11-bearing system that makes casting and retrieval a breeze with any type of lure you want to use. It also offers an anti-reverse bearing that helps prevent the line from spooling off your reel when it’s not necessary.

Serious anglers who want to have a smaller reel will also likely appreciate the fact that this reel is made with 32 mm aircraft-grade Duralumin U-shape spool that is much lighter and smaller in profile than most other types of reels you might find for the same price. This spool is specially designed to offer better acceleration than other reels that are made for using small, light lures, which means you’ll be able to cast out much farther than you would otherwise.

The reel can function as an all-purpose model that is perfect for anglers like myself, who don’t like the larger, heavier reels that are more common in the fishing industry.

Lightweight Construction

It’s hard to achieve the same great performance and function in a baitcasting reel that is smaller than the standard models you’ll find in the fishing industry today. There are a few other brands who make special reels that are designed to be smaller and lighter, but these models often experience durability problems due to the fact that the housing is made from lesser materials. The HyperMag reel is incredibly tough despite its small stature and you should have no problems with the reel’s durability.

You’ll be hard-pressed to find a reel that’s lighter and offers comparable performance to the Team Lew’s HyperMag. The one-piece magnesium frame is specially designed so that it won’t flex or give any against extreme amounts of weight or pressure. The reel also offers highly-durable C45 carbon fiber side plates that help to further decrease the overall weight while not sacrificing much in the way of toughness.

Another important point that should be recognized when it comes to reel’s durability is the spool, which is made from aircraft-grade duralumin. This spool material is designed to offer increased overall strength and durability that makes the reel capable of handling a fight with a sizable fish.

All of these characteristics are aimed at making the reel comfortable to use for all-day fishing trips. While most other reel models might be quite a bit heavier and cause fatigue in your arms and wrists, using a super lightweight reel like the HyperMag is much more comfortable and offers a better overall feel in the hands of the user.

Carbon Fiber Drag System

One of the main concerns I have when it comes to lightweight reels is whether or not the drag system is actually capable of being used to reel in a sizable fish that might pull harder than usual. Many brands will often cut corners when it comes to producing lightweight reels by making the drag system out of cheaper materials. That’s not the case with the Team Lew’s HyperMag reel as its carbon fiber drag system is more than capable of stacking up against almost any species of fish.

This reel model offers a surprising 20 pounds of drag, which is more than enough to deal with common species like largemouth bass, walleye, and many others. You’ll have no problem setting the hook on a fish and cranking it through heavy cover or out from deep water.

Bearing System

The general consensus when it comes to fishing reels is that more ball bearings typically equal out to better smoothness in casting and retrieval. Regardless of the type of lure you’re using, the Team Lew’s HyperMag is capable of casting the lure out to a considerable distance based on the internal components that include the Speed Gear system.

The ball bearings are specially designed to cut down on the amount of friction that’s caused when you cast your line out, as well as when you are retrieving it. The bearings are all made using stainless steel double shielded ball bearings, which are designed to further decrease any friction that might be cause by the movement in the reel’s internal mechanisms.

Braking System

One of the biggest concerns that I have regarding baitcasting reels is whether or not the reel offers some type of braking system. I have spent too much time in my fishing career un-tieing air knots to bother with a reel without a braking system. This is exceptionally important as it can be really easy to backlash a reel like this if you’re not careful. The Team Lew’s HyperMag is made with a Speedcast Adjustable Centrifugal Braking system that can be adjusted to meet the level of braking each individual needs.

This braking system helps to progressively slow down the spool’s rotation as it is being cast out to help protect against the possibility that you might end up with a bird’s nest in the reel. Anglers are able to quickly adjust this braking system using an external knob.

Speed Dial Line Indicator

One of the most interesting features of the Team Lew’s HyperMag is the reel’s Speed Dial Line Indicator system. This is a super convenient mechanism that is designed to recognize what type of line, as well as what pound test is currently on the reel. By using this Speed Dial system, you can set the reel to the specific type of line and test to help give it just the right amount of spool rotation so that you can cast out to a farther distance and also avoid having your line backlash.

  • High gear ratio is great for spoons and buzzbaits
  • Extremely lightweight for this many features
  • High quality braking system to eliminate air knots from backlash

  • This is not an affordable reel
  • The high gear ratio makes it somewhat less versatile and is difficult to retrieve slow moving, deep diving crankbaits
  • If you are looking for a true high gear ratio option, then there are others available

Alternate Competitor Comparison

I also like to look at what else you could get in the same range to compare its performance, price, and value for money. In this case I have picked the Abu Garcia Revo Rocket. This is another high gear ratio baitcaster that is designed for bass. Let’s have a look at their stats.

FeaturesAbu Garcia Revo RocketLew’s Hypermag
Gear Ratio 10.1:1 8.3:1
Weight 7.3 oz5.4 oz
Retrieve Rate41 inches30 inches
Max Drag18 lb20 lb
Ball Bearings10+110+1
Price Range$$$$$$

You can clearly see that the revo rocket offers a much higher gear ratio and retrieve rate. This makes it ideal for buzzbait lures, but is less versatile overall. It is also heavier than the Hypermag and offers a slightly lower max drag.

The Team Lew’s Hypermag comes in at a slightly more expensive price than most other reels from this brand, but there’s no denying that it’s one of the lightest reels on the market that also features an excellent performance on the water. If you’re in the market for a more compact, lightweight reel and you don’t want to be forced to sacrifice much in terms of overall quality, the HyperMag is likely to be suitable for you.
